FOLDED FLOWERS

This is the folded ribbon rose.  The folding technique is Victorian and the ribbons were hand braided using the marudai.  Both patterns can be found in Jacqui Carey's Book Creative Kumihimo.  The fibers used in the stem were a cotton/viscrose(?) mixture.  The Rose is perle cotton #8 and a gold metal thread embroidery floss.

This Flower in Plaid is made from perle cotton #8.  Both braids were made on the  round foam disk.  The square foam disk that most zig zag braids would have been nice due to the size of the center opening.  But the zig zag braids can be done on the round disks without much problem.

Both of these braids were entered into an bi-national juried art exhibit but were not selected.

I decided to try a zig zag braid after people on the Kumi2 list were talking about the flowers they made at the Kumi Conference in Kyoto in November 2007.  I had no clue how the flower was folded and stitched so I did it by the Victorian method.  Later on I found out each petal layer was a seperate segment of a braid.  The purple plaid is one continuous ribbon as well as the green stem.

The pink plaid rose is a necklace and the purple plaid flower is a brooch.

Both flowers are around 3 inches in diameter with between 24-36 inches of braid.
